GDLSK partner Arthur Bodek recently joined Yvonne Bendinger-Rothschild, Executive Director of the European American Chamber of Commerce in New York (EACCNY), for an episode of EACCNY’s “What’s Happening Across the Atlantic?” podcast series. The episode examines the fast-escalating trade dispute between the United States and Canada.
Bodek walks through the issues that caused trade negotiations between the two countries to collapse, including automotive tariffs, Canadian restrictions on U.S. dairy and alcohol products, and disputes over Quebec labeling and French-language content rules. He also addresses the practical fallout: Canada’s planned retaliatory tariffs taking effect September 8, the administration’s announced increase of Section 232 tariff rates on Canadian goods to 50 percent effective 2027, and the fact that this tariff, unlike many prior measures, carries no exception for goods originating under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement.
Bodek notes that this shift is likely to prompt companies to reexamine country of origin planning and sourcing decisions and pointed to early signs of Canadian producers redirecting distribution away from the U.S. market as a result.
