Benjamin Kalan is an Associate (pending admission) in the Firm’s New York office. He began his career with the Firm as a summer associate in 2024. His practice is focused on customs and international trade law. Mr. Kalan has experience with the classification of merchandise under the Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States, country of origin determinations, Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA) compliance, Enforce and Protect Act (EAPA) investigations, first sale appraisement programs, drafting protests, litigation document drafting, and Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests.
Before beginning his legal career, Mr. Kalan worked as an English teacher in France and as a consultant for several federal agencies, including the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). In connection with this work, he obtained a Secret security clearance. He attended law school in the evenings while working full-time as a federal consultant, gaining a unique perspective on regulatory processes and government operations that informs his practice today.
